WORLD WAR III?

With Israel's recent incursions into Lebanon on top of the Jewish state's attacks on the Palestinians, is World War III about to start? Has it already started? The essay below is truly frightening; it minces no words, so prepare yourselves before continuing on. The author, lest there be any doubt, is not pro-Israel! I myself have accumulated doubts over whether the majority of those who today call themselves Jews are really descendents of Abraham--but that is a long story for another time. This is speculation, not prophesy--but it might be time to be checking our supplies and seeing if we have a few months of nonperishables and a good supply of clean water on hand!

"And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.
"
--- Country Joe and the Fish, The Fish Cheer & I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag (Vanguard Records, 1967)

Some say that WW3 now has begun. I say it began with 9-11.

Here's the setup as of today:

With the American incursion into the Middle East stalled due to public resistance generated by failure in both Afghanistan and Iraq, Israel believes it must directly destabilize and/or control all Islamic fundamentalist states, else face certain destruction in the future. Israel's conduct in the region since the Palestinians were pushed aside to make way for its formation after WWII has made Israel's viewpoint a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Israel is in the process of seizing the balance of Palestine via the simple expedient of killing or driving out all remaining Palestinians from their homeland.

Simultaneously, and by its own declaration, Israel has begun a war with Lebanon.

Hezbollah, Islamic military protector of Lebanon, now has declared war upon Israel. Based in Lebanon, Hezbollah is supported and directed by Syria and Iran.

That means Israel also is at war with Syria, since Lebanon is directed and protected by Syria (which Israel has wanted America to invade). Syria formally has declared its support for Lebanon.

Therefore Israel soon will be at war with Iran, since Syria and Iran have a mutual defense pact (and Israel has wanted America to invade Iran, too). Iran already has pledged "support" for Syria and previously has called for Israel to be "wiped off the map."

North Korea and Iran have been very cozy in recent years: North Korea has nuclear missiles but no money, while Iran has lots of money but no nuclear missiles. They share a deep and unabiding hatred of America. Do the math.

Iran wants Israel dead and the American puppet regimes removed from all Arab countries.

Israel wants Iran broken apart and under its own control, along with every other Middle Eastern state.

North Korea wants South Korea and the removal of American forces from Asia.

China wants Taiwan, long has wished to eliminate Japan and also would like the removal of American forces from Asia.

Russia would like both America and Israel to stop meddling in the affairs of its breakaway republics and former client states in the Middle East.

America wants to rule the world; indeed, believes it already does so.

The world economy is so broken due to plundering by International bankers and other Zionist elite that Depression II is inevitable. Just like WWII and Depression I, WWIII will be the only way to distract people from their impending economic misery, mask the effects of Depression II and get economies going again. Just like WWII and Depression I, international bankers and other Zionist elite will be the real beneficiaries by loaning and selling to all sides and once again scooping up small businesses, farms and residences for one-tenth their value.

The average American, dumbed down by a broken education system and both distracted and lied to by the most tightly-controlled media in history, is unaware of most of the foregoing already-existing scenario, not to mention real history. American Christian fundamentalist dispensationalists desperately want to believe the media lies about Arabs starting hostilities, with Israel merely defending itself. The subplot, involving the usual International bankers and other Zionist elite, is denied by even knowledgeable Americans.

Here's how it could play out from here:

Israel bombs Syria. Syria invokes its mutual aid pact with Iran in order to deal with Israel. Iran must cross Iraq to help Syria, which puts Iran at war with America, regardless of what America does or does not do at Israel's behest. America uses its mini-nuclear "bunker buster" bombs on Iran, in response, because America quite literally has no other option available. Israel helps out with air support.

Iran and Syria launch Silkworm or Russian Sunburn missiles (which cannot be defended against) against American naval forces in the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean, respectively, thereby neutralizing America's navy and cutting off resupply of ground troops in Iraq. Or, perhaps, with the nuclear shackles off, a handful of nuclear air bursts take out all of America's carrier groups. Regardless, kiss the American Atlantic fleet goodbye. Resupply becomes impossible and it is a long walk from Baghdad to Kuwait, so America's Middle Eastern ground forces, too, are removed from the equation and likely annihilated.

With America out of the way, Iran launches nukes against Israel, which cannot defend against even Scud missiles, thereby turning Israel into a giant, self-illuminated glass parking lot. As a parting gesture, Israel launches its massive nuclear arsenal against all of its Middle Eastern enemies and selected cities in Russia and Europe (just as it has threatened should its destruction become inevitable). Or, Israel might well launch preemptively and Iran respond, with the same result. Regardless, Israel's six million Jews perish in the ensuing nuclear holocaust, thereby finally fulfilling Hebrew prophecy.

Simultaneously, Islamic fundamentalist factions take over all American puppet states in the Middle East, such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Egypt. A resurgent Libya helps out. An Islamic fundamentalist union arises in what is left of the Middle East, stretching from Turkey to India and from Kazakhstan to North Africa. And they have nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, North Korea invades South Korea, forcing America to use nukes since it has no other option with which to defend American forces stationed there. North Korea responds in kind against all American strongholds within reach, including those in Japan (e.g., Yokosuka).

China moves on Taiwan, as threatened for so many years, using nukes if necessary. Kiss the American Pacific Fleet goodbye when it interferes as dictated by America's defense pact with Taiwan. Technically, China now is at war with America, who likely dithers and does not launch against China. China may well move against Japan at this point. America dithers further, distracted by its problems in the other direction.

NATO dissolves.

Now homeless but following sealed orders, Israel's nuclear subs position themselves in an attempt to mimic those of America and Russia, then launch against both China and Russia in order to fulfill Israel's pledge to take the Western world down with itself. China retaliates against America and Russia with a very limited nuclear strike, albeit everything it has, while invading Russia and seizing everything east of the Ural mountains.

Russia retaliates against military targets in what she perceives to be Jewish America and Jewish Britain (and possibly Jewish Germany and Jewish Austria) for Jewish Israel's nuclear attack, if revealed, else simply against America. Russia's extensive nuclear strike against China kills half its population, yet still leaves it with the largest conventional army in existence.

With its oil supply cut off, no manufacturing infrastructure left and its military forces (most of which were overseas) destroyed, America has no conventional defensive capability left. America uses its nuclear ICBMs to counterattack military targets, inside both Russia and China, prompting a massive Russian counterstrike against American population centers.

All surviving nuclear missile submarines, having launched their weapons, return home to their respective countries. Russia and China reload and return to sea. America has nothing with which to reload ... for the time being. Israel's subs dock in America, where they likely are met by angry mobs and destroyed.

America, now beheaded and lying prostrate, lapses into widespread race wars, with Aztlan in the Southwest and New Africa in the deep south coming into existence ... for the time being. America's shadow government is pulled from its underground vaults, tried for war crimes and shot by nascent New American forces.

China seizes Alaska, then moves into Western Canada and Northwestern America, where it is stopped cold by unexpectedly ferocious American and Canadian guerilla warfare.

What is left of Russia and Europe consolidate their defensible borders, which have changed radically, and sign a mutual-defense pact.

America ceases to be a world player and struggles merely to survive. New America emerges from the ashes with a strong sense of its ethnic heritage due to the race wars it just has endured.

The attempt at a New World Order results in an effective standoff between EuroRussia, Greater Islam and China. Eventually, New America joins EuroRussia and assumes its rightful position as a merely coequal player in world affairs.

South America and Africa return to widespread tribal warfare and genocide, experience massive famine and pandemic disease and thereby restore a natural balance between their environments and their much-reduced remaining human populations. Pockets in South America actually thrive.

WW4 looms in the not-so-distant future, to be fought by our grandchildren.

Australia and New Zealand likely escape unscathed, but, like the rest of the world, in WW4 will face a serious threat from China.

For more on all the foregoing, see the last three chapters in my book, Defensive Racism, entitled World War III, Money's End Game: Depression II and New America.

U.S. May Be Going Bankrupt, Key Fed Member Says

This is a fairly extraordinary revelation, if not especially surprising. Every so often, someone in a position to know--an Insider, that is--tells the truth. There is usually a reason. Perhaps the power elite wants the dollar to go down so that the amero can be phased in to replace it. (Then the elites will proceed to destroy that, of course.) Our present-day policies are threatening the same kind of hyperinflation that, e.g., destroyed Argentina a few years ago.

This is being circulated by email, but hasn't been published in America. Imagine my astonishment at that!

US 'could be going bankrupt'
By Edmund Conway, Economics Editor
(Filed: 14/07/2006)

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2006/07/14/cnusa14.xml&menuId=242&sSheet=/money/2006/07/14/ixcity.html

The United States is heading for bankruptcy, according to an extraordinary paper published by one of the key members of the country's central bank.

A ballooning budget deficit and a pensions and welfare timebomb could send the economic superpower into insolvency, according to research by Professor Laurence Kotlikoff for the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis, a leading constituent of the US Federal Reserve.

Prof Kotlikoff said that, by some measures, the US is already bankrupt. "To paraphrase the Oxford English Dictionary, is the United States at the end of its resources, exhausted, stripped bare, destitute, bereft, wanting in property, or wrecked in consequence of failure to pay its creditors," he asked.

According to his central analysis, "the US government is, indeed, bankrupt, insofar as it will be unable to pay its creditors, who, in this context, are current and future generations to whom it has explicitly or implicitly promised future net payments of various kinds''.

The budget deficit in the US is not massive. The Bush administration this week cut its forecasts for the fiscal shortfall this year by almost a third, saying it will come in at 2.3pc of gross domestic product. This is smaller than most European countries - including the UK - which have deficits north of 3pc of GDP.

Prof Kotlikoff, who teaches at Boston University, says: "The proper way to consider a country's solvency is to examine the lifetime fiscal burdens facing current and future generations. If these burdens exceed the resources of those generations, get close to doing so, or simply get so high as to preclude their full collection, the country's policy will be unsustainable and can constitute or lead to national bankruptcy.

"Does the United States fit this bill? No one knows for sure, but there are strong reasons to believe the United States may be going broke."

Experts have calculated that the country's long-term "fiscal gap" between all future government spending and all future receipts will widen immensely as the Baby Boomer generation retires, and as the amount the state will have to spend on healthcare and pensions soars. The total fiscal gap could be an almost incomprehensible $65.9 trillion, according to a study by Professors Gokhale and Smetters.

The figure is massive because President George W Bush has made major tax cuts in recent years, and because the bill for Medicare, which provides health insurance for the elderly, and Medicaid, which does likewise for the poor, will increase greatly due to demographics.

Prof Kotlikoff said: "This figure is more than five times US GDP and almost twice the size of national wealth. One way to wrap one's head around $65.9 trillion is to ask what fiscal adjustments are needed to eliminate this red hole. The answers are terrifying. One solution is an immediate and permanent doubling of personal and corporate income taxes. Another is an immediate and permanent two-thirds cut in Social Security and Medicare benefits. A third alternative, were it feasible, would be to immediately and permanently cut all federal discretionary spending by 143pc."

The scenario has serious implications for the dollar. If investors lose confidence in the US's future, and suspect the country may at some point allow inflation to erode away its debts, they may reduce their holdings of US Treasury bonds.

Prof Kotlikoff said: "The United States has experienced high rates of inflation in the past and appears to be running the same type of fiscal policies that engendered hyperinflations in 20 countries over the past century."

Paul Ashworth, of Capital Economics, was more sanguine about the coming retirement of the Baby Boomer generation. "For a start, the expected deterioration in the Federal budget owes more to rising per capita spending on health care than to changing demographics," he said.

"This can be contained if the political will is there. Similarly, the expected increase in social security spending can be controlled by reducing the growth rate of benefits. Expecting a fix now is probably asking too much of short-sighted politicians who have no incentives to do so. But a fix, or at least a succession of patches, will come when the problem becomes more pressing."

American Dream Is Slipping Away

Long week--three articles leaving me little time to seek out those by others to post here. Not that there haven't been some. The issue over the possible scheme to create a North American Union is still around. But this article won the day. Of course, eroding our borders will make the situation it describes ten times worse.

The American dream may have slipped away, but as the later paragraphs indicate, so has the capacity of the American public to think fundamentally about what to do to get it back. No indication of turning from Republicrats and Demopublicans; no indication of a need to change the "political system" at a fundamental level; no indication that the "system" might be the problem.

Here are some solutions: support candidates from public office who:

(1) Are neither trained Donkeys nor hired Elephants (so to speak).
(2) Will agree to shut down the Federal Reserve and return to Constitutionally sound money (value regulated by Congress, not private bankers).
(3) Will agree to shut down the Internal Revenue Service and end the direct, unapportioned tax on personal incomes.
(4) Will agree to secure, unequivocally, private property rights.
(5) Will get the U.S. out of the United Nations, out of NAFTA, out of CAFTA, out of the WTO.
(6) Will end federal education programs such as School-To-Work and No Child Left Behind, and shut down the U.S. Department of Education.

Too radical for today's timid American public, I suppose. Which is why we can probably expect more of the same, this November. But if you keep doing what you've been doing, you'll continue getting the results you've been getting. Which means: the American dream will continue slipping away, in the face of cosmetic, touchy-feely "let's all work together" non-solutions.

Study: American dream slipping away
Belly Up Aspen
Troy Hooper - Aspen Daily News Staff Writer

Wed 07/12/2006 09:01PM MST

The American dream is closer to a hallucinatory hope than a reachable reality, according to a new study presented at The Aspen Institute last week.

With the cost of living rising on several fronts, the majority of Americans surveyed in the study "What Do American Voters Really Want in '06?" said they are not living the dream that the European settlers who first founded this country suggested could be realized through hard work, courage and a determination to improve one's life.

Even though 81 percent of those surveyed agree the United States is the land of opportunity, they also said the concept is not being achieved and is abstract. The study indicated 61 percent of Americans say they are not living the dream and nearly two-thirds of those who are not living it don't believe they will achieve the dream in their lifetime. Dr. Douglas E. Schoen, a nationally renowned pollster, conducted the study.

In a presentation at the Greenwald Pavilion, Schoen said the study's goal was to go beyond the simplistic polls in newspapers that show President Bush is currently not popular. He said the study examines the undercurrents that are driving and shaping American attitudes, and, for many citizens, their dreams of a better life are directly tied to their finances.

"There is a growing affordability crisis in America," said Schoen, a pollster for more than 30 years who has worked with former President Bill Clinton, New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg and New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine. "The American dream is largely broken, if not irreversibly destroyed."

In fact, the study found that 75 percent of those surveyed believe the American dream is somewhat broken, with just one in four saying it is alive and well. Nine out of 10 agree that it is harder to achieve the American dream than ever before. Moreover, just 49 percent agree that if you work hard and play by the rules, a solid middle-class life can be achieved.

"The rising costs of health care, the unaffordability of a college education and the need to self-finance your retirement leaves most Americans today caught in an affordability crisis," Schoen said.

"Americans from all income groups are simply saying life as we know it, has become unaffordable and that the promise of achieving the American dream is simply out of reach for too many people."

He added: "There is sadness in the country."

The study says the consensus of Americans believe that neither the Democrats or the Republicans can satisfactorily address the "crisis," and despite six years of Republican control of the White House and Congress, there is no desire to give more control to the Democrats.

"The American people are really looking for moderate and even conservative policy prescriptions," said Schoen, noting that 72 percent of those surveyed agree today's world has changed but our political parties have not. "There is no sense the country should move to the left after six years of Republicans and there is no sense the country should move farther to the right either."

Americans' centrist attitudes are supported, according to Schoen, by the study's findings that 74 percent said the government should pursue policies that grow the economy compared with just 26 percent who say that the government should redistribute wealth from the richest to the middle class and the poor. Almost two-thirds also said the government should play a constructive role in traditional institutions such as church, marriage and family.

Almost everyone surveyed, or 95 percent, agreed with the statement that "Our country is strongest when it is united and together and therefore we need to find common solutions to our problems that both Democrats and Republicans can agree with." Working together, 80 percent agree the United States can address all the problems it faces, according to the study's findings.

Even though Schoen's analysis determined that neither Democrats or Republicans can address the nation's affordability problems, he declared that the party offering the most tangible solutions would benefit in the November election.

"I think it is clear what the American people want. I think it is unclear given our political system of how we can achieve that goal," Schoen said.

The Aspen Institute commissioned the study in conjunction with last week's Aspen Ideas Festival, which brought many of the world's thought leaders to town. The survey was conducted among 1,200 U.S. voters and has a 1.44 percent margin of error, according to Schoen.

"The Aspen Ideas Festival is in large measure a reflection of America in 2006 and what better way to get an understanding of our times than to utilize the skills of a renowned pollster. Doug Schoen has proven himself to be a reliable resource for that. He had offered it up and we thought it was a terrific idea to show what America is thinking," said Aspen Institute spokesman Jim Spiegelman.

20 Amazing Facts About Voting in the U.S. Today

Interesting facts about the results of our shift to paperless electronic voting machines in America. Have we become a banana republic--possibly headed for more disputed elections on a par with what is going on in Mexico right now?

We are fortunate to have in our midst a true political analyst who sends us further insight into the challenge of our voting system. The original message is printed below for your objective consideration. BCC is being sent out to original list. ~dl

There is a tendency to say "Yes, but ..." to much of this "evidence."

For example, "Yes, Jeb Bush is the president's brother and governor of Florida and a Republican, but elections in Florida (as in most places) are administered by county government elected and appointed officials who are in many counties Democrats."

The Dems, at least in Florida, are not all squeaky clean either. A year or two before the 2000 fiasco in Florida a court threw out the results of the last election for mayor in one of the Dade County cities because the vote count had been tampered with.

OTOH, I never hear a mention of Shoup voting machines based in Philadelphia in these roundups. Their push button and flashing light "Shouptronic" macines are used here in Berks Co., PA. Several years ago, the head of the Shoup company entered a guilty plea when charged with rigging an election conducted on his company's machines.

My position is that, so long as we value a secret ballot, we must use paper ballots and hand counting open to public view. I would prefer to abandon the secret ballot and have votes announced in public and recorded on paper in view of the voter and public. Any machine system, even the old electromechanical ones with levers, can be tampered with.

I have examined some of the "evidence" of tampering in Ohio and found it less than convincing. In one county cited in a "study" proving the 2004 count was fraudulent they pointed to Bush getting something over 70% of the votes as "proof." But I looked up the full 2004 results for that county and found that Bush trailed the average Republican candidate (state legislature, county commissioner, etc.) by about three points. I looked at the three prior elections in that county and GOP votes in contested races ranged from about 60-90%. In every election I reviewed, several offices failed to attract any Democrat candidate at all. Conculsion - that is just a very heavily GOP county, just as you could find wards in Cleveland where no Democrat ever gets less than 70% of the vote and many offices are not even contested by the GOP.

I once made a fair case that Wisconsin was stolen for the Dems in a recent election. Unfortunately, this sort of thing cuts both ways. The important point is to avoid making this a partisan issue and stress the fact that we are moving toward a system of black box voting which will destroy what little public confidence is left in the electoral system. To keep harping on the themes of "Gore won" or "Kerry won" is to assure that most of the half of the electorate that is Republican (not all of whom are Bush fans) will see the whole business as a Democratic plot and not pay attention to the larger issue.

Is Dick Cheney Betting On Economic Collapse in America?

This article hasn't appeared (that I know of) in print in America. Imagine my shock. Before dropping this into the fan, one remark: obviously this crap started before Bush the Younger went into office. Clinton was also a slimeball, as was Bush the Elder. But the present Regime has made everything six times worse. If Democrats take over Congress in November as I'm predicting they will, and if the dollar does tank between now and 2008, I can't help wondering if Bush the Younger will even be allowed to finish his second term.

Whatever else happens, I think there's a real donnybrook coming!

Is Cheney betting on Economic Collapse?
by Mike Whitney

July 4, 2006

Wouldn’t you like to know where Dick Cheney puts his money? Then you’d know whether his "deficits don’t matter" claim is just baloney or not.

Well, as it turns out, Kiplinger Magazine ran an article based on Cheney’s financial disclosure statement and, sure enough, found out that the VP is lying to the American people for the umpteenth time. Deficits do matter and Cheney has invested his money accordingly.

The article is called "Cheney’s betting on bad news" and provides an account of where Cheney has socked away more than $25 million. While the figures may be estimates, the investments are not. According to Tom Blackburn of the Palm Beach Post, Cheney has invested heavily in "a fund that specializes in short-term municipal bonds, a tax-exempt money market fund and an inflation protected securities fund. The first two hold up if interest rates rise with inflation. The third is protected against inflation."

Cheney has dumped another (estimated) $10 to $25 million in a European bond fund which tells us that he is counting on a steadily weakening dollar. So, while working class Americans are losing ground to inflation and rising energy costs, Darth Cheney will be enhancing his wealth in "Old Europe". As Blackburn sagely notes, "Not all 'bad news’ is bad for everybody."

This should put to rest once and for all the foolish notion that the "Bush Economic Plan" is anything more than a scam aimed at looting the public till. The whole deal is intended to shift the nation's wealth from one class to another. It’s also clear that Bush-Cheney couldn’t have carried this off without the tacit approval of the thieves at the Federal Reserve who engineered the low-interest rate boondoggle to put the American people to sleep while they picked their pockets.

Reasonable people can dispute that Bush is "intentionally" skewering the dollar with his lavish tax cuts, but how does that explain Cheney’s portfolio?

It doesn’t. And, one thing we can say with metaphysical certainty is that the miserly Cheney would never plunk his money into an investment that wasn’t a sure thing. If Cheney is counting on the dollar tanking and interest rates going up, then, by Gawd, that’s what’ll happen.

The Bush-Cheney team has racked up another $3 trillion in debt in just 6 years. The US national debt now stands at $8.4 trillion dollars while the trade deficit has ballooned to $800 billion nearly 7% of GDP.

This is lunacy. No country, however powerful, can maintain these staggering numbers. The country is in hock up to its neck and has to borrow $2.5 billion per day just to stay above water. Presently, the Fed is expanding the money supply and buying back its own treasuries to hide the hemorrhaging from the public. It's utter madness.

Last month the trade deficit climbed to $70 billion. More importantly, foreign central banks only purchased a meager $47 billion in treasuries to shore up our ravenous appetite for cheap junk from China.

Do the math! They're not investing in America anymore. They are decreasing their stockpiles of dollars. We’re sinking fast and Cheney and his pals are manning the lifeboats while the public is diverted with gay marriage amendments and "American Celebrity".

The American manufacturing sector has been hollowed out by cutthroat corporations who’ve abandoned their country to make a fast-buck in China or Mexico. The $3 trillion housing (equity) bubble is quickly loosing air while the anemic dollar continues to sag. All the signs indicate that the economy is slowing at the same time that energy prices continue to rise.

This is the onset of stagflation; the dreaded combo of a slowing economy and inflation.

Did Americans really think they'd be spared the same type of economic colonization that has been applied throughout the developing world under the rubric of "neoliberalism"?

Well, think again. The American economy is barrel-rolling towards earth and there are only enough parachutes for Cheney and the gang.

The country has lost 3 million jobs from outsourcing since Bush took office; more than 200,000 of those are the high-paying, high-tech jobs that are the life's-blood of every economy.

Consider this from the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) June edition of Foreign Affairs, the Bible of globalists and plutocrats:

"Between 2000 and 2003 alone, foreign firms built 60,000 manufacturing plants in China. European chemical companies, Japanese carmakers, and US industrial conglomerates are all building factories in China to supply export markets around the world. Similarly, banks, insurance companies, professional-service firms, and IT companies are building R&D and service centers in India to support employees, customers, and production worldwide." ("The Globally Integrated Enterprise" Samuel Palmisano, Foreign Affairs, June 2006, p.130)

"60,000 manufacturing plants" in 3 years?!?

"Banks, insurance companies, professional-service firms, and IT companies"?

No job is safe. American elites and corporate tycoons are loading the boats and heading for foreign shores. The only thing they’re leaving behind is the insurmountable debt that will be shackled to our children into perpetuity and the carefully arranged levers of a modern police-surveillance state.

Welcome to Bush’s 21st Century gulag; third world luxury in a Guantanamo-type setting.

Take another look at Cheney’s investment strategy; it tells the whole ugly story. Interest rates are going up, the middle class is going down, and the poor dollar is headed for the dumpster. The country is not simply teetering on the brink of financial collapse; it is being thrust headfirst by the blackguards in office and their satrapies at Federal Reserve.

William Norman Grigg on the Origins of Fascism in America

Back from July 4 holidays and wondering what we are independent from, here is the essay of the morning, from William Norman Grigg's Birch Blog. Fascism and traditional conservatism are polar near-opposites, of course. Adorno either had an agenda or didn't know what he was talking about (I vote for the first, of course). As for fascism and what passes for conservatism today--that's another story.

It's Happening Here

Friday, June 30, 2006, 04:20 PM

We will not recognize it as it rises. It will wear no black shirts here. It will probably have no marching songs. It will rise out of a congealing of a group of elements that exist here and that are the essential components of Fascism....

It will be at first decorous, humane, glowing with homely American sentiment. But a dictatorship cannot remain benevolent. To continue, it must become ruthless. When this stage is reached we shall see that appeal by radio, movies, and government-controlled newspapers to all the worst instincts and emotions of our people. The rough, the violent, the lawless men will come to the surface and into power. This is the terrifying prospect as we move along our present course.

John T. Flynn, American Mercury,
February 1941

For decades, beginning with the 1950 publication of Theodor Adorno's study The Authoritarian Personality, the conservative movement was regularly described as a form of incipient fascism. Cultural Marxists of the Frankfurt School, Adorno and his comrades denounced as innately “fascist” any organized effort to preserve traditional culture, institutions, and values from state-abetted subversion.

Adorno and his cohorts pulled off a neat little inversion of reality, given that Fascism – as instituted by Mussolini (who drew his inspiration from Lenin) was an effort to make all institutions subordinate to the state. Furthermore, from the time The Authoritarian Personality made its debut, until roughly the mid-1960s, the dominant strains in conservative thought were anti-interventionist, anti-militarist, as well as opposed to the growth of state power domestically – in short, very much the exact opposite of the Fascist program.

However, while Adorno and his ilk were spreading the bovine residue from which a thousand dishonest “academic” exposes of the Right would sprout, the seeds of an authentically fascist “conservatism” were being planted elsewhere.

In 1952, the individual who would become the Johnny Appleseed of American neo-Fascism, William F. Buckley, adumbrated that vision in an essay published by Commonweal. Owing to the threat posed by the Soviet Union, Buckley asserted, “we have to accept Big Government for the duration – for neither an offensive nor defensive war can be waged given our present government skills, except through the instrument of a totalitarian bureaucracy within our shores… [Thus we] will have to support large armies and air forces, atomic energy, central intelligence, war production boards, and the attendant of centralization of power in Washington....” (Emphasis added.)

Buckley never deigned to explain how home-grown totalitarianism would be preferable to the version exported by the Soviets, or how distant, impoverished Soviet Russia – even armed with atomic weapons it developed with the aid of its allies in the FDR regime – could pose a more credible threat to our freedoms than the government headquartered in Washington, D.C.

But these questions were of no moment to Buckley; his objective was to cure conservatism of its suspicions about Big Government and its tendency to seek the preservation of freedom. One of the first things he did was to reject for publication in National Review an essay written by the well-respected John T. Flynn warning that the real enemy of our freedoms was in Washington, rather than Moscow or Peking.

He then proceeded to conduct a purge – using methods infinitely milder than those employed by the Soviets, but following very similar priorities – of conservative elements deemed unsuitable, including the John Birch Society, followers of Ayn Rand and other libertarians, and sundry unsavory and insignificant figures whose worldview was entirely defined by racial or religious prejudices.

By the mid-1960s, the general outline of Buckley-style conservatism was well-established: It would countenance occasional complaints about tax rates or business regulation, as well as wistful efforts to defend traditional mores (as long as those efforts posed no serious threat to the cultural “consensus”) -- but the Warfare State was utterly sacrosanct.

Preservation of the Warfare State eventually requires redefinition of the State's domestic role, and inevitably this leads to efforts to redefine dissent as sedition.

By 1969, with the cultural conflict over Vietnam raging and other social conflicts feeding urban violence, National Review published an essay bearing the melodramatic title “Shall We Let America Die?” Harking back to Buckley's 1952 “murder-suicide” formula for “winning” the Cold War, the later essay seemed to argue that rather than letting America (a nation defined by liberty under law) die, we should put it to death through a program the author described as “expediential fascism.”

“The very nature of the situation creates competing codes and doctrines extreme in content and alien to the balancing compromises of liberal polity,” wrote NR contributor Donald Atwell Zoll, whose gifts obviously did not include clarity of expression. “The stringent demands of such a rudimentary struggle of power and ideas invites political approaches that are totalitarian in nature; not quite in the original fascist sense that puts all aspects of life under the aegis of political authority, at least in the general sense that political theory can no longer restrict itself to general conditions and procedural rules, but must offer a comprehensive, authoritative resolution of a number of specific political and social questions.”

Take the basic thought expressed in that paragraph, denude it of the academic vocabulary, dumb it down to the point of infantilization, and you have the standard-issue harangue delivered five days a week, three hours a day, by Sean Hannity: The liberals are only interested in power, they'll do anything to get it back, and so we have to be willing to do anything to keep it.

One of the fundamental conceits of the totalitarian mind-set is that reality itself must yield to the demands of the Party's ideology – and that mind-set is well-represented in the GOP-aligned Right. From there it's but a few goose-steps to the conclusion that those who persist on interpreting reality without the supposed benefit of the official ideology really should be killed.

And the Bu'ushists are already there.

Witness the comments from Ann Coulter that Rep. John Murtha, a decorated 37-year Marine combat veteran, should be “fragged” for his public (and highly qualified) opposition to the Great Decider's war in Iraq.

Witness as well the diseased musings of Ann Coulter wannabe Melanie Morgan (a radio talk show host and occasional guest on cable television) about putting various journalists to death for the supposed crime of publicizing the Bush regime's misdeeds: “[T]he best solution that I can think of to deal with any newspaper editor, whether it's from the NY Times, LAT, WaPo, or the Wall Street Journal who is responsible for leaking national security classified information, is to be locked in a steel cage with the family members of slain troop members who would happily deliver the ultimate punishment of death.”

By “national security classified information,” Comrade Morgan means concealed official misconduct. She also obviously employs some kind of reverse sliding scale in handing out death sentences, given that she hasn't issued a similar malediction against the Bush regime for its misuse of classified information to punish whistle-blowers.

(And if Morgan were serious about allowing survivors of “slain troop members” to have a crack at those Americans responsible for their deaths, the suggestion she would have to make would earn her a visit from the Secret Service.)

The ever-vigilant Lew Rockwell points to another illustration of this proto-fascist mindset, which comes in the form of a prefabricated “patriotic” spam e-mail, the likes of which we've come to know altogether too well.

Written in the form of a religious homily, the e-mail describes the same question asked by anguished mothers whose sons have died in foreign wars, from Iraq backwards to the War for Independence. In each instance the mother asks a sound and penetrating question of the president: Why did my son have to die on a battlefield?

“Then long, long ago,” concludes the author of this little exercise in blasphemous State-worship, “a mother asked, `Heavenly Father, why did my Son have to die on a cross outside of Jerusalem?' The answers to all these are similar -- `So that others may have life and dwell in peace, happiness and freedom.'”

This exemplifies a third element of the totalitarian worldview -- the deification of the State as the collective expression of a sanctified people.

Not content to cast the US President in the role of God the Father, and the president's victims in a role akin to that of God the Son, the e-mail concludes with that most Christian of expressions, the vulgar death threat:
“IF YOU DON'T STAND BEHIND OUR TROOPS, PLEASE, FEEL FREE TO STAND IN FRONT OF THEM.”

A half-century ago, describing conservatism as a species of incipient fascism was a vile and despicable canard. As for what is advertised as “conservatism” today, however....

CLOSED FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY WEEKEND

This Blog is temporarily closed in honor of Independence Day, July 4. What we are now independent from is anyone's guess, but I still choose to honor the Holiday.

Posting will resume on July 5.
